Cyclospora is a rare parasite that causes a lengthy gastrointestinal illness. (AP Photo/Centerd for Disease Control and Prevention)

WASHINGTON (AP) ? State and federal investigators are trying to figure out the source of a stomach bug that has sickened 372 people in 15 states. Iowa and Nebraska have linked some cases in their states to eating pre-packaged salad mix, but the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration have said the mix is not linked to all of the cases.

Some frequently asked questions about the infection and the outbreak:

Q: What are cyclospora infections and how do people contract them?

A: Cyclospora infection, or cyclosporiasis, is caused by parasites that are spread when people ingest food or water contaminated with feces. People who are exposed usually become sick after about a week and have bad diarrhea and other flu-like symptoms that can last from a few days to a month or longer if untreated. It's common to feel tired and relapse is possible. It's not generally contagious and can be treated with antibiotics. Deaths from the infection are rare.

Q: Who is usually at risk?

A: People who live or travel in tropical or subtropical countries are most at risk, according to the CDC. The infections are rare in the United States but have been linked in the past to imported fruits and vegetables.

Q: Am I at risk in this current outbreak? How do I know if I have it?

A: You are probably OK if you have not already gotten sick. The CDC reports that most of the illnesses were reported between mid-June and early July. Fifteen states have so far reported illnesses: Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Texas and Wisconsin.

Q: How does the government trace the source of illnesses like this?

A: It takes a lot of legwork and coordination between states and the federal government. Cases are confirmed when a sick person gives a sample to his or her doctor and that sample is tested. If it is positive, it will eventually be reported to a state health department. The states then gather that data and coordinate with the CDC to look for common strains that could link the illness to a specific product. State and federal officials interview the victims and closely question them about what they ate around the time they fell ill ? often a difficult task, as it is hard for most people to remember everything they ate over an extended time. That is made even harder in a cyclosporiasis investigation because the illness doesn't show up for a week.

In this outbreak, the Food and Drug Administration says its investigators have been trying to trace the paths of the food eaten by those who fell ill. Food often goes through several stops ? potentially in several countries ? before it reaches a grocery cart, and the FDA said the process is "labor-intensive and painstaking work, requiring the collection, review and analysis of hundreds and at times thousands of invoices and shipping documents."

The agency said it has a seven-person team in its Maryland headquarters and specialists in 10 field offices across the country working to identify the source of the outbreak.

Q: What can I do to prevent contracting an illness like this?

A: Short of growing all of your own food, it may be unavoidable. All foods ? including those labeled local, natural or organic ? have the potential to be exposed to safety hazards on the farm, in transit or in the store. Sometimes all it takes is one rogue animal that broke through a fence or one employee who didn't wash his hands to infect food.

What you can do is make sure you practice safe handling and preparation. The FDA recommends always washing hands, utensils and surfaces with hot, soapy water before and after handling food. You should also thoroughly wash all fresh produce before you eat it. Those measures should significantly reduce your chances of getting sick.

HUNTINGTON, Indiana ? One of the two northern Indiana teenagers badly hurt in a Florida parasailing crash is out of the hospital nearly a month after the accident.

The parents of 17-year-old Alexis Fairchild say she was released Tuesday from an Indianapolis hospital and returned to the family's Huntington home.

Fairchild faces another surgery in a couple months, along with outpatient physical and speech therapy, her parents said in a statement. Her injuries included broken bones in the upper part of her spine, a skull fracture and a brain injury.

"Our daughter still has a long road to recovery," Michael and Angela Fairchild said.

Fairchild and 17-year-old friend Sidney Good of Roanoke were hurt July 1 after a rope tethering them to a boat snapped and strong winds slammed them into a condominium building, a power line and a parked car at Panama City Beach.

The Coast Guard has said severe weather and the boat's proximity to shore were major factors in the accident.

Good was moved to an Indianapolis rehabilitation hospital last week after surgery for facial fractures.

Both girls were hospitalized in critical condition in the days after the accident but recovered enough to be transferred to Indianapolis a couple weeks later.

"Words cannot express the gratitude we feel for all the prayers and support we have received from around the world," the Fairchilds said. "We would like to thank those who have arranged fundraising events and upcoming blood drives and motorcycle rides in our hometown in honor of our daughter and Sidney Good."

Exclusive: Bakken flaring burns more than $100 million a month

By Ernest Scheyder

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Oil drillers in North Dakota's Bakken shale fields are allowing nearly a third of the natural gas they drill to burn off into the air, with a value of more than $100 million per month, according to a study to be released on Monday.

Remote well locations, combined with historically low natural gas prices and the extensive time needed to develop pipeline networks, have fueled the controversial practice, commonly known as flaring. While oil can be stored in tanks indefinitely after drilling, natural gas must be immediately piped to a processing facility.

Flaring has tripled in the past three years, according to the report from Ceres, a nonprofit group that tracks environmental records of public companies.

"There's a lot of shareholder value going up in flames due to flaring," said Ryan Salmon, who wrote the report for Ceres. "Investors want companies to have a more aggressive reaction to flaring and disclose clear steps to fix the problem."

The amount lost to flaring pales in comparison to the $2.21 billion in crude oil production for May in North Dakota.

Still, energy companies are working to build more pipelines and processing facilities to connect many of the state's 9,000 wells - a number expected to hit 50,000 by 2030. But it is a process that takes time and is not always feasible.

"Nobody hates flaring more than the oil operator and the royalty owners," said Ron Ness of the North Dakota Petroleum Council, an industry trade group. "We all understand that the flaring is an economic waste."

Alliance Pipeline is spending about $141 million on a 79-mile pipeline that will carry natural gas from Bakken wells to Alliance's larger interstate pipeline, which cuts through North Dakota from Alberta.

Hess Corp is spending $325 million to more than double its Tioga, North Dakota, processing plant's daily capacity once it opens in May.

VISIBLE FROM SPACE

Roughly 29 percent of natural gas extracted in North Dakota was flared in May, down from an all-time high of 36 percent in September 2011. But the volume of natural gas produced has nearly tripled in that timeframe to about 900,000 million cubic feet per day, boosting flaring in the state to roughly 266,000 million cubic feet per day, according to North Dakota state and Ceres data.

North Dakota's flaring, which NASA astronauts can see from space, releases fewer greenhouse gases than direct emission of natural gas into the air, but it is essentially burning product that could be sold at a profit if there were pipelines.

In Texas and Alaska, which have a well-developed energy infrastructure, less than 1 percent of natural gas extracted along with oil is burnt off, according to state data.

Oil production remains king in North Dakota, outpacing the amount of natural gas extracted and funding many infrastructure projects. Yet production of natural gas likely will double by 2025, increasing flaring, according to state forecasts.

Drillers have promised to end the practice. Continental Resources Inc , the second-largest Bakken operator with 1.1 million acres under its control, famously declared in March it wants to reduce flaring to "as close to zero percent flaring as possible."

Continental says it flares 10.8 percent of natural gas it produces, and is working with pipeline companies and landowners to cut the number further.

"Internally, it's a front-and-center focus for our company to have wells connected," said Jeff Hume, Continental's vice chairman of strategic growth initiatives. "Everybody makes money when that product is sold, not flared."

The components of natural gas, including low-value methane and lucrative butane, a so-called "natural gas liquid" highly prized by chemical makers, are worth roughly $13 per million cubic feet of natural gas before taxes and transportation fees, at current prices.

With more than 266,000 million cubic feet flared each day in North Dakota, that's roughly $3.6 million in lost revenue, more than $100 million per month.

Roughly 2,300 miles of new pipeline were installed in North Dakota in 2011, the latest year for which data is available. Still, the Bakken spans 18,000 square miles and is the largest oil field in North America.

And about 13 percent of natural gas flared is at wells that already have pipelines that are too small to handle the high volume of natural gas being drilled, an additional infrastructure problem.

"Everyone's on the same page as far as getting the flaring reduced," said Justin Kringstad, head of the North Dakota Pipeline Authority, a state agency. "It's going to take time to get all the necessary infrastructure built out."

The remains of two large 6000-year-old halls, each buried within a prehistoric burial mound, have been discovered by archaeologists from The University of Manchester and Herefordshire Council -- in a UK first.

The sensational finds on Dorstone Hill, near Peterchurch in Herefordshire, were thought to be constructed between 4000 and 3600 BC.

Some of the burnt wood discovered at the site shows the character of the building's structure above ground level -- in another UK first.

The buildings, probably used by entire communities, are of unknown size, but may have been of similar length to the Neolithic long barrows beneath which they were found 70metres and 30m long.

They were, say the team, deliberately burnt down after they were constructed and their remains incorporated into the two burial mounds.

However -- much detail has been preserved in the larger barrow: structural timbers in carbonized form, postholes showing the positions of uprights, and the burnt remains of stakes forming internal partitions.

Most importantly, the core of each mound is composed of intensely burnt clay, representing the daub from the walls of the buildings.

The buildings were likely to have been long structures with aisles, framed by upright posts, and with internal partitions.

The smaller barrow contains a 7m by 2.5m mortuary chamber, with huge sockets which would have held upright tree trunks at each end.

These massive posts bracketed a linear 'trough' lined with planks, which would have held the remains of the dead.

Professor of archaeology from The University of Manchester Julian Thomas and Dr Keith Ray Herefordshire Council's County Archaeologist, co-directed the excavation.

Professor Thomas said: "This find is of huge significance to our understanding of prehistoric life-- so we're absolutely delighted.

"It makes a link between the house and a tomb more forcefully than any other investigation that has been ever carried out.

"These early Neolithic halls are already extremely rare, but to find them within a long barrow is the discovery of a lifetime."

He added: "The mound tells us quite a bit about the people who built it: they sought to memorialize the idea of their community represented by the dwelling.

"And by turning it into part of the landscape, it becomes a permanent reminder for generations to come.

"Just think of how the burning of the hall could have been seen for miles around, in the large expanse of what is now the border country between England and Wales."

Archaeologists have long speculated that a close relationship existed between houses and tombs in Neolithic Europe, and that 'houses of the dead' amounted to representations of the 'houses of the living'.

In addition to the two long mounds, the site has provided evidence for a series of later burials and other deliberate deposits, including a cremation burial and a pit containing a flint axe and a finely-flaked flint knife.

The objects have close affinities with artefacts found in eastern Yorkshire in the Late Neolithic (c. 2600 BC).

Dr Ray said: "These subsequent finds show that 1000 years after the hall burial mounds were made, the site is still important to later generations living 200 miles away a vast distance in Neolithic terms.

"The axe and knife may not have been traded, but placed there as part of a ceremony or an ancestral pilgrimage from what is now East Yorkshire.

"So we witness an interconnected community linking Herefordshire and East Yorkshire by marriage and by descent 5000 years ago."

He added: "In the British context, the Dorstone find is unique and unprecedented.

"We were hoping our work with The University of Manchester would help us to give us a clearer picture of the origins of these long barrows- but we were surprised how clearly the story came through.

"It's very exciting for us: for 15 years I have been arguing that Herefordshire has something important to say on the national picture of our Neolithic heritage."

Summer Baseball: Franklin Legion falls to Kingston in extra innings

Anthony Chaiton pitched into the ninth inning, scattering six runs (two earned) on 12 hits, striking out three while picking off two runners, but the Franklin Legion team was dealt a tough 6-5 loss in nine innings at the hands of Kingston in the American Legion Zone 6 Sectional playoffs Sunday.

Post 75 (21-5) will play Dartmouth Monday at Adams Field in Quincy (4 p.m.) with its season on the line in the double-elimination tournament.

"We?re just going to take it one game at a time," said Franklin manager Mark D?Angelo. "We can?t worry about Tuesday or Wednesday. We have to get through tomorrow first, so we?re just going to look to play seven good innings of baseball, and we?ll see what happens."

Steven Gilbert went 2-for-4 for Franklin with a two run single in the third inning that put Post 75 ahead 3-1. Gilbert later came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Riley Young, giving Franklin a 4-1 advantage.

Evan Abbott went 2-for-4 and put Franklin on the board with an RBI single in the second inning.

Kingston scored twice in the top of the ninth when they loaded the bases before a walk and a throwing error allowed Post 32 to take a 6-4 lead.

MILFORD GAME PUSHED BACK: Due to an unplayable field, Sunday's game between Wachusett and Pittsfield in the Zone 4 Sectional playoffs was postponed until Monday at 5 p.m.

Post 59 will now host the winner of that game Tuesday at Fino Field (7 p.m.).

Senior Babe Ruth

MEDFIELD 5, ASHLAND 3: Zach Blecher took a no-hitter into the sixth inning for second-seeded Ashland, but top-seed Medfield found its stroke, rallying for five runs to even up the Central Mass. Senior Babe Ruth South finals at a game apiece and send the series to a decisive third game.

Ashland (17-7) held a 3-0 lead heading into the sixth inning. Medfield (18-5) will host Ashland in game three Monday at 5:30 p.m.

"Tonight?s loss was tough, but we need to have a short term memory and turn around and play again tomorrow night," said Ashland coach Kyle Wilson. "We know the task at hand and we need to take care of business."

Mike Lichtenstein went 2-for-3 with an RBI double for Ashland while also scoring a run on a double steal.

Derek Masionis also chipped in for Ashland, going 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Pat Lawlor pitched 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for Medfield, while Matt Pembroke and Justin Hirschfeld each hit an RBI single during the sixth inning rally.

Encircling India by string of pearls an illusion: Chinese scholar

Encircling India by string of pearls an illusion: Chinese scholar Beijing: The development of a number of strategic ports in South Asia, like Gwadar in Pakistan, by China is not to contain India but to protect the country's own "legitimate economic interests" in the Indian Ocean, a Chinese scholar has said.

"China's existence in the Indian Ocean is a productive force that brings economic prosperity and strategic security. 'Encircling India' by 'a string of pearls' is an illusion fuelled by paranoia," Hu Zhiyong wrote in an article 'India wears unreal string of pearls' published in state run 'Global Times' on Monday.

"India, if we are to believe the forecasts of alarmist scholars, is going to wear a heavy and suffocating string of pearls" Hu wrote in the article.

Encircling India by string of pearls an illusion: Chinese scholar

"It is true that China is enlarging its investment in some countries around the Indian Ocean in seaports," it said referring to Beijing's heavy investments in ports like Gwadar in Pakistan, Colombo and Hanmabanthota in Sri Lanka, Sittwe in Myanmar, Chittagong in Bangladesh and Chabahar port in Iran.

"However, it is not true that China's involvement in the Indian Ocean bears ulterior motives under an ostensibly commercial cover," said Hu, associate research fellow at the Institute of International Relations, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences.

"These ports where China sets foot geographically might resemble a 'string of pearls' that encircles India, but a strategy named after this fact is imaginary," he said.

"China has shown no signs that it plans to dominate the Indian Ocean, and China has no intention to build naval bases beyond its territory. Besides, the ports that China is investing in do not have the capability of forming a military chain," Hu wrote in the article.

Encircling India by string of pearls an illusion: Chinese scholar

But at the same it admitted that latest move by China to take over Gwadar port has "strategic significance" for Beijing "to guarantee the safety of its sea lanes and maintain the balance of power and stability in the Indian Ocean".

"Take Gwadar as an example. There is no doubt that as a deepwater port lying at the key junction of Africa, South Asia and the Middle East, it has prominent strategic significance," it said.

But due to its poor infrastructure construction of the Gwadar port, the Chinese navy has "never regarded it as a strategic asset", it said adding that "like the other ports, it would be a flawed "pearl" if aimed for military use", it said.

"India's influence over the same maritime space is not diminished due to China's involvement. As a major sea power, India has been pursuing the modernisation of its navy for decades," Hu wrote in the article.

Gunman among 7 dead after Fla. apartment shootout

HIALEAH, Fla. (AP) ? A gunman holding hostages inside a South Florida apartment complex killed six people before being shot to death by a SWAT team that stormed the building early Saturday following an hours-long standoff, police said.

Sgt. Eddie Rodriguez told The Associated Press that police got a call around 6:30 p.m. EDT Friday that shots had been fired in a building with dozens of apartments in Hialeah, just a few miles north of Miami.

Although a crisis team was able to briefly establish communication with the man, Rodriguez said talks eventually "just fell apart" with the gunman, who was holding two hostages on the fifth floor. Both of them survived when officers stormed the building, fatally shooting the gunman during an exchange of gunfire.

"They made the decision to go in there and save and rescue the hostages," he said.

The dead bodies of three women and two men were found at two different apartment units inside the building, which Rodriguez said was in a "very quiet neighborhood." Another man who was walking his children into an apartment across the street also was killed. Rodriguez said it wasn't immediately clear whether the gunman took aim at him from an upper-level balcony or if he was hit by a stray bullet.

"From up there, he was able to shoot at people across the street, catching this one man who was just walking into his apartment," Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez said police were still investigating the motive and identifying the gunman and victims.

"Investigators are talking with families of the victims, neighbors, people that were present when all this began," he said. "That way we can start to piece together this huge puzzle that we're working with."

Hudson wedding party boat crash: Driver had 'signs of intoxication' - sheriff

A boat carrying members of a wedding party struck a barge in the Hudson River Friday night. The boat's operator was charged with first-degree vehicular manslaughter Saturday. NBC's Lester Holt reports.

By Tracy Jarrett and Alastair Jamieson, NBC News

The pilot of a speedboat that crashed into a barge on the Hudson River while carrying six members of a wedding party, including the bride-to-be, was charged on Saturday with vehicular manslaughter.

Jojo John, 35, was also charged with three counts of vehicular assault over Friday night?s crash, said Rockland County Sheriff William Barbera, according to Reuters.

"There were signs of intoxication," Barbera added, although lab test results were still pending.

John was in custody at Nyack Hospital Saturday night where his condition was ?critical,? according to hospital spokesperson Lauren Malone.

The best man, identified as Mark Lennon, was still missing after the accident. The search was suspended at 5 pm local time on Saturday and was set to continue on Sunday morning.

One female body was found discovered adrift and without a life jacket not far south of the Tappan Zee Bridge, Rockland County Undersheriff Robert Van Cura told NBCNewYork.com.

Four others remained in the hospital Saturday while investigators continued their search, it reported.

The Coast Guard said six people were on a 21-foot Stingray near Piermont, N.Y., when it hit the barge at around 10:40 p.m. local time on Friday near the bridge.

The accident happened shortly after the boat left Piermont for a short trip across the river to Tarrytown, Rockland County Sheriff's Department Chief William Barbera said at a news conference on Saturday morning, according to the Associated Press.

"While the Rockland County Sheriff, N.Y. State Police and U.S. Coast Guard continue to investigate this tragic incident, the New York State Thruway Authority is conducting its own review of safety procedures on the Hudson River as part of the New NY Bridge Project,? said Brian Conybeare, special advisor to the governor, in a statement.

The bride-to-be, identified by family members as Lindsey Stewart, 30, was to get married on Aug. 10, relatives told NBC New York.

?Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families during this difficult time," Conybeare added.

Groom-to-be Brian Bond, 36, is among the four injured passengers, who were described as suffering severe injuries, including head trauma and broken bones. Bond is in ?fair? condition at Westchester Medical Center, according to spokesman David Billing.

Some of those injured are awake and providing information to investigators. Bond, however, is currently unable to speak due to his injuries, Walter Kosik, the bride?s stepfather told NBC New York.

Police said that while it would have been dark in the area at the time of the crash, the barge was lit up.

"At this point, Tappan Zee Constructors, LLC, has reported to the Thruway Authority that all Coast Guard lighting requirements were met and that the barges were properly lit Friday night. All lighting was checked Saturday morning and is fully operational at all barge locations associated with the project,? Conybeare said in the statement.

Al Shabaab claim attack on Turkish mission in Somalia, three dead

By Feisal Omar and Abdi Sheikh

MOGADISHU (Reuters) - A car loaded with explosives rammed into an office housing Turkish embassy staff in the Somali capital, killing three people, witnesses and officials said on Saturday, the latest in a series of blasts claimed by Islamist al Shabaab rebels.

Al Shabaab was pushed out of bases in Mogadishu by Somali and African forces about two years ago, raising hopes of a return to relative security in a city hit by years of war.

But the militants have kept up guerrilla-style attacks and continue to control large rural areas, challenging the authority of a government less than a year old.

The group has carried out several brazen attacks in the past two months, including one on an African peacekeeping convoy that killed eight and another on the main U.N. compound in Mogadishu that killed 22 people.

"A suicide car bomb targeted a building housing Turkish embassy workers near K4 (Kilometre Four)," police officer Ahmed Mohamud told Reuters from the scene of the blast.

Three people were killed and nine others were wounded, he said.

"The car was taking advantage of a Turkish car that was going into the building, thus the car bomb exploded and destroyed the gate," he said.

A Turkish government official told Reuters that one Turkish security officer was killed when the mission's guards clashed with the attackers as they attempted to enter the complex.

Three Turkish officers were being treated for their wounds, Turkey's Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Al Shabaab, which said earlier this month it would increase attacks during the Ramadan fasting period, claimed responsibility for the bombing on its Twitter feed.

"Mujahideen forces in Mogadishu have just carried out an operation targeting a group of Turkish diplomats in Hodan district," al Shabaab said.

"All the Mujahideen who carried out the operation have returned safely back to their bases inside Mogadishu, preparing for the next operation."

Somalia is attempting to rebuild itself after two decades of civil war and lawlessness, triggered by the overthrow of president Siad Barre in 1991.

The fragile government is being backed by international aid aimed at preventing it from becoming a haven for al Qaeda-style militants in east Africa.

Turkey has led efforts to help Somalia, pouring some $400 million of aid into the country since 2011, most of it from private companies.

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, who became the first non-African leader to visit Somalia in nearly 20 years when he traveled there in 2011, said the attack was carried out by "supposed Muslims".

"They are doing this against our government. Why? Because we are helping our brothers in Mogadishu," Erdogan said in a speech that was broadcast live.

Turkey has also sought a greater diplomatic role in the region, including brokering dialogue this year between Somalia and Somaliland.

The United States condemned the attack, saying that Turkey, a NATO ally, had played an important role in helping Somalia emerge from two decades of conflict.

"This cowardly act will not shake our commitment to continue working for the brighter, more democratic and prosperous future the people of Somalia deserve," State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a statement.

Democratic Party chair: Mayor Filner should resign

by Catalina Camia on Jul. 26, 2013, under News

Source: USA TODAY

WASHINGTON ? The national chairwoman of the Democratic Party is calling on San Diego Mayor Bob Filner to resign ?for the good of the city.?

Seven women have come forward to accuse Filner, elected in November, of sexual harassment. The former Democratic congressman has apologized for his behavior, but has rejected calls to step aside and insists ?due process? will vindicate him.

?The misconduct Mayor Bob Filner has been accused of is reprehensible and indefensible,? said Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida, who does double duty as Democratic National Committee chair. ?I am personally offended by his actions and I firmly believe no employee should face a hostile environment or harassment at their place of employment.

?There is no place for this type of conduct in the workplace and certainly not in our city halls and public offices,? she said.

Wasserman Schultz?s comments echo a theme sounded by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who called the conduct exhibited by Filner ? and New York City mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner ? ?reprehensible.? Weiner has rejected calls to quit his campaign, amid revelations that he continued to send salacious messages to women online even after such behavior forced him to quit Congress in 2011.

Municipal offices in California are non-partisan. Filner, a member of Congress from 1993 until his election in San Diego, is the first Democrat to be elected mayor of California?s second-most populous city in 20 years.

Chromecast tip: Broadcast Youtube videos straight from the browser

Chromecast on Youtube web

It's worth a quick reminder that Chromecast doesn't just mirror a browser tab onto your TV. You also can beam individual YouTube videos on over, same as you do from your phone or tablet. By now you've got the "Google Cast" extension installed, right? Once you've got it, just head on over to Youtube and fire up a video. Then look for the Chromecast icon in the lower right. Click it and choose where you want to send the video to. Done.

The Path Toward Improved Biosurveillance

I especially liked the weaponized "Ebolapox", the crossover between Ebola and smallpox.

How ever did they plan to limit the spread of that, once it had gotten out? Vaccination programs that you run in advance can be copied, and if you think you can do it during a war, well, a few bombs here and there would end your ability to protect yourself, leaving you in the same mess as everyone else. Nice as a doomsday weapon, "everybody dies! game over!" but not much for actually winning a war.

Odds for Every Player on Canada's Preliminary Olympic Roster to Make Final Cut

Heading into camp, this group is squarely on the bubble, meaning that their chances are roughly 50-50 to make Yzerman's final cut. The upside for this group is that if they start the season playing their best hockey, there could be room for them on this roster.?

?

Forwards

Patrice Bergeron

Jeff Carter

James Neal

Mike Richards

Patrick Sharp

Jordan Staal

Martin St. Louis

Of these seven, at least four or five will make the team (assuming the nine ranked above them do as well, and the nine ranked below them do not), and each of the players in this group brings something different to the table.

For now, Bergeron is the closest to a sure thing, with Richards, Carter and Sharp just behind him, and there's a reason for that. Staal and Neal have both had success in postseason play, but not to the same degree that the previously mentioned four have, at least lately. Obviously Bergeron and Richards, as returning members of Team Canada, have a leg up, but Sharp and Carter figure to earn spots as well.

It's also worth noting that Carter was the final cut from 2010 squad, so one has to assume he'll come storming out of the gates this season. If Jordan Staal starts the season playing strong two-way hockey, he'll edge Neal out for one of the final spots up front.

Martin St. Louis is a possibility as well, because he does play for Yzerman's NHL club in Tampa Bay and has built up a dangerous partnership with Steven Stamkos, who will be a fixture on Canada's power play regardless.?

?

Defensemen

Dan Boyle

Mike Green?

Dion Phaneuf

Alex Pietrangelo

Marc Staal

The defense corps on this team will be as deep as any group Hockey Canada has ever put together, and that's why there are so many guys on the bubble heading into the season. If Yzerman elects to go with a puck-moving blueliner with offensive ability, Green might have the edge over Boyle after the Capitals star's resurgence last season, but Phaneuf's physical game may earn him a look as well.

Beyond them, Alex Pietrangelo has a good chance at cracking the squad after serving as the Blues' top defenseman for the last two seasons. New York's Marc Staal also had a reasonably favorable chance, but unless he shows he's fully recovered from his eye injury, he still comes with some red flags attached.?

?

Goaltending?

Corey Crawford

After winning the Cup in dramatic fashion, Crawford enters the season as the most likely candidate to get the No. 3 role, but it's not a lock at this point. He's had some prolonged slumps in the past, so if he struggles in the early going, Holtby or Smith could conceivably leapfrog him on the depth chart.?

House rejects bid to curb spy agency data collection

By David Alexander

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. spy program that sweeps up vast amounts of electronic communications survived a legislative challenge in the House of Representatives on Wednesday, the first attempt to curb the data gathering since former NSA contractor Edward Snowden revealed details of its scope.

The House of Representatives voted 217-205 to defeat an amendment to the defense appropriations bill that would have limited the National Security Agency's ability to collect electronic information, including phone call records.

Opposition to government surveillance has created an unlikely alliance of libertarian Republicans and some Democrats in Congress, The House vote split the parties, with 94 Republicans in favor and 134 against, while 111 Democrats supported the amendment and 83 opposed it.

The White House and senior intelligence officials opposed the amendment by Republican Representative Justin Amash of Michigan, which had been prompted by Snowden's revelations. Snowden, a fugitive from the United States, has been holed up at a Moscow airport for the past month unable to secure asylum.

The House later approved the defense appropriations bill, which included nearly $600 billion in Pentagon spending for the 2014 fiscal year, including the costs of the Afghanistan war.

Republican Representative Tom Cotton, who endorsed the NSA program, described the "metadata" being collected as essentially a five-column spreadsheet containing the number called, the number of the caller, the date, the time and the duration of call.

"This program has stopped dozens of terrorist attacks," Cotton said. "That means it has saved untold American lives. This amendment ... does not limit the program, it does not modify it, it does not constrain the program, it ends the program. It blows it up."

Cotton, a former Army captain who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, said a comprehensive set of phone call records was needed in order for the program to work.

"If you want to search for a needle in a haystack, you have to have the haystack. This (amendment) takes a leaf-blower and blows away they entire haystack. You will not have this program if this amendment passes."

'SIMPLY WRONG'

But Amash, a conservative Republican, and other supporters of the amendment said the fundamental issue was whether the U.S. government had the right to collect and retain the personal communications data of American citizens.

"Government's gone too far in the name of security," said Representative Ted Poe, a Texas Republican. "Rein in government invasion, no more dragnet operations, get a specific warrant based on probable cause or stay out of our lives."

Representative Joe Barton, another Texas Republican, said the issue was not whether the NSA was sincere or careful in collecting data for use in anti-terrorism operations.

"It is (about) whether they have the right to collect the data in the first place on every phone call on every American every day," he said, noting that the law only allowed collection of relevant data. "In the NSA's interpretation of that, relevant is all data, all the time. That's simply wrong."

U.S. spy chiefs, the White House and senior lawmakers responsible for overseeing intelligence agencies in Congress had joined ranks against the effort to curb the program.

Representatives Mike Rogers of Michigan and Dutch Ruppersberger of Maryland, the Republican chairman and senior Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said in a statement after the vote that the amendment would have eliminated a "crucial counterterrorism tool."

"The charge that the program tramples on the privacy of citizens is simply wrong," they said, promising to work to build public confidence in the program's privacy protections.

In an unusually public discourse on a secret spying program, James Clapper, the director of national intelligence, urged the House in a statement on Wednesday to be wary of the "potential effect of limiting the intelligence community's capabilities" under the current law.

Clapper's statement came amid a push against the proposal by the White House and other senior intelligence officials, including Army General Keith Alexander, the head of the NSA, who visited lawmakers on Capitol Hill on Tuesday to warn about the implications of the amendment.

The House overwhelming approved a separate amendment dealing with the NSA surveillance program that was billed as an alternative to the Amash amendment.

But critics charged that the measure only restated current law, which prevents collection of the content of emails and phone calls, and would not deal with collection of "metadata."

Earnings misses, weaker golds pull TSX lower

By John Tilak

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canada's main stock index fell on Wednesday, hit by disappointing results from Cenovus Energy Inc and Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd as investors processed a flood of earnings reports from the country's top corporations.

Gold-mining shares gave back more than 2 percent as a drop in the price of bullion weighed on the group.

The market also digested more evidence of economic recovery in Europe, a manufacturing rebound in the United States, and growing signs of a slowdown in China.

Strong results from Loblaw Cos Ltd , Encana Corp and Rogers Communications helped push up shares of those companies but failed to push the market on to positive ground as the index extended losses from the previous session.

"It's hard to get too excited about the Canadian market as you have the drag from the golds and the materials side," said Gavin Graham, chief strategy officer at Integris Pension Management Corp.

"But companies like Rogers and Loblaw are showing that the non-resource side of things is actually doing quite well," he added.

The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index <.gsptse> was down 25.30 points, or 0.20 percent, at 12,720.08.

CP Rail reported a slightly lower-than-expected quarterly profit, hurt by floods and a number of high-profile derailments. The stock stumbled 1.3 percent to C$128.52.

The materials sector, which includes mining stocks, lost almost 2 percent due to the weakness in gold producers. Goldcorp Inc lost 2.5 percent to C$29.88, and Barrick Gold Corp fell 2.7 percent to C$18.18.

Shares of energy companies gave back more than 1 percent, with lower oil prices hitting sentiment.

Cenovus Energy Inc's second-quarter operating profit missed analysts' expectations by a wide margin as higher crude costs hurt refining operations. The oil producer dropped 3.6 percent to C$31.08 and played the biggest role of any single stock in pushing the index lower.

But Encana gained 0.2 percent to C$18.17 after Canada's largest gas producer reported a 25 percent increase in second-quarter operating profit as its move to spend the bulk of its budget on developing more lucrative oil- and liquids-rich natural gas plays paid off.

Shares of Loblaw rose 2.5 percent to C$49.15 after Canada's biggest grocer reported a higher quarterly profit as food and clothing sales rose, prompting a raise in its full-year operating income forecast.

Rogers reported a steep rise in wireless data revenue for the second quarter. The stock climbed 2.3 percent to C$42.19.

Six of the index's 10 main sectors, including the weighty financials group, were higher.

Senior Open 2013: Fred Couples welcomes the return to 'normal' golf after 'concrete' of Muirfield

The 53-year-old finished a credible tied 32nd at The Open proper last week at Muirfield and has headed south to take on his peers with the aim of emulating his success last year at Turnberry. But in these last few days he has been forced to re-acclimatise himself to ?normal? golf.

?Last week was like concrete,? Couples said. ?Every shot you hit rolled forever. I don?t think many of us have played golf like that before. Here, it?s rained, it?s pretty green, the greens are receptive so it?s pretty different.

?I think we?re going to try to fly the ball onto the greens and stop them which is unlike last week and I?ll have to mentally get out of my mind that I was hitting eight-irons from 210 yards. Now I?m going to be hitting five and six-irons.?

Couples tees it up at 1.50pm alongside Colin Montgomerie, who makes his Senior Open debut, and Mark O?Meara, who won the 1998 Open Championship at Birkdale.

Yesterday, O?Meara was awarded honorary membership of Birkdale and was clearly emotional when talking about the Lancashire links. However, with string winds forecast he is not expecting much romance. Indeed, O?Meara, who shot a 67 in the first round of the Open, believes the veterans version could be an even more severe test.

?It?s going to be just as demanding if not even tougher to be honest with you, especially if it blows,? O?Meara said. ?I?ve played it in really severe conditions before. You just have to be very patient and sometimes par is a very good score.?

The course is set up less than 100 yards shorter than when Padraig Harrington won the Open there in 2008.

Kenny Perry, who has won the last two senior majors, is skipping the event leaving Couples as favourite. And although Montgomerie will inevitably command headlines, there will be plenty of focus on Bernhard Langer as well as Tom Watson.

I Don't Know About Romantically, But My Platonic LDR Is The Best ...

There?s been a lot written about long-distance relationships of the non-platonic nature. That writing includes this here study claiming that folks in long-distance relationships form stronger bonds in a shorter amount of time than couples dwelling in the same area code.

From everything I?ve read about Fievel-Style (you know, because you guys are both like, ?Soooomewheeeere ooout theeere!? to each other as you FaceTime) relationships of the genital touching persuasion, this study stands in stark opposition to the common stance on LDRs.?

I should be clear that when I say "common stance," I mean "stuff my friends say." I?ve seldom heard good things about long-distance relationships. Most of my friends seem to agree: If you aren?t near enough to touch someone?s wiener or front bottom on the regs, the longevity and stolidness of your relationship is bound to be in jeopardy.?

I?ve never been in a real long-distance romantic relationship. This is because if I?m going to go out of my way to make myself romantically miserable, my preferred dose of awful is falling desperately in love with a man who will absolutely never return my affections.?

That said, one of the most successful relationships of my adult life has been, by and large, a long distance one, so maybe there?s something to this study in question.

I met one of my best friends right after I turned 18 and started college. Her name is Alex, and she was my freshman year roommate. I was puttering about our dorm room, nervously awaiting her arrival in my Ani DiFranco concert-tee and my novelty pink sunglasses. I don?t know what I was expecting from the high-pitched voice I?d heard on the phone, but the nearly six-foot-tall, curvaceous Texan who opened the door, doffed her snakeskin cowboy hat and bellowed ?HOWDY? was not it.

We circled each other warily, before spending our first night at college together, lounging on her bed and watching When Harry Met Sally. It?s now 12 years later and we are closer than ever.

Though we?ve known each other over a decade, most of the time has been on opposite sides of the country, her in Texas, me in New York. Still, we talk almost everyday, though seldom on the phone since I abhor that device. (WHY DO PEOPLE LIKE TALKING ON THE PHONE? HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN TO TALK? YOU CAN?T SEE THE OTHER PERSON?S FACE, Y?ALL!) Granted, mostly these conversations involve her harassing me into watching all of "Shameless" or "Orphan Black," but we?re always in touch.?

When we do see each other, we fall right back into our own rhythms. Living together definitely helped -- we?re both chicks who need our ?FUCK OFF WORLD? time in order to be decent. But I think ultimately our friendship has not just survived but thrived for reasons contrary to what the study might suggest.

The study says that couples in successful LDRs are characterized by a tendency to idealize each other. I do not idealize Alex. In fact, she is a moody twat-face at times. (LOVE YOU, MEAN IT) If I idealized her, it would make the times we saw each other miserable. I?d be like, ?Alex, why aren?t you educating me about Japanese feminism and making me chicken fried steak while grinning?? Then, she would hit me, and I would deserve it. Conversely, she would probably be like, ?Oh my god, are you crying again? WHY DO YOU HAVE ALL THESE FEELINGS? Loser.??

Our friendship transcends time and space (whoa) because we don?t impose idealistic standards upon it. I?m highly sensitive and emotional, she turns all that shit inward. I can?t expect her to come to me in a time of grief and offer wise words and hugs, but I learned when my family dog died, that she will be more than willing to stuff me with Oatmeal Pies and prop me up in front of Indiana Jones. Frankly, I wouldn?t have it any other way.?

Have you ever had a successful LDR of the romantic or non-romantic persuasion? What do you think are the secrets to making it work? Also I am trying to make Alex move into my apartment in New York with me here in December -- everyone tell her that she should. Seriously though.
