PayPal Looks To Startup Past, Product Future With Marcus As President
eBay CEO John Donahoe announced this morning that David Marcus, the former CEO and founder of mobile payments startup Zong and PayPal Mobile VP, will be taking over as PayPal's president. As you may know, former president Scott Thompson departed PayPal in January to be Yahoo's CEO. Marcus joined PayPal last year when the payments giant?acquired Zong for $240 million. Marcus stepping into the top spot at PayPal is not particularly surprising considering his extensive experience in the mobile and payments world, but it's interesting that eBay chose a Silicon Valley startup entrepreneur (as opposed to an exec with large company experience) to lead its crown jewel. We had a chance to chat with both Donahoe and Marcus about the next era of PayPal under Marcus' leadership. Donahoe explains to us "David is the right guy for the right time at PayPal. PayPal is on the cusp of an enormous opportunity and David is a product visionary," he says. McLaren's battle with Ferrari growing fierce

A race last weekend in?Melbourne, Australia, kicked off what many?are predicting could be the most competitive year in decades on the Formula One circuit, where the Red Bull team hopes to regain its crown and Ferrari is looking for a comeback.? But perhaps no team will be fighting harder to restore its good name than McLaren, the British brand that long dominated the sport and has, in its nearly half-century, won one of every four F1 races it has entered.
But while McLaren, founded by New Zealand expat Bruce McLaren in 1963, has taken a number of checkered flags in recent seasons its last big year was 2008, when Lewis Hamilton took the F1 driver?s championship, and while it continues to land on the podium, that?s not good enough for Managing Director Antony Sheriff.
?We consider it a bad year when we come in second, and an awful year when we come in third," he said. "Second place is just first place for losers.?
Even as McLaren battles it out on the track it is also taking aim at the street.? Over the years, the maker has tried its hand several times at entering the consumer market, first with a million-dollar supercar not so coincidentally named the F1, and then, in the middle of the last decade, with the SLR AMG, which it produced as part of a joint venture with former Formula One team partner Mercedes-Benz.
Now McLaren is planning to go it alone with an audacious plan to take on rival Ferrari on the pavement as well as on the F1 circuit.? Its all-new MP4-12C supercar recently rolled into a select group of showrooms in the U.S. and abroad -- and more products are in the works.
?We?re a 50-year-old start-up,? says Sherriff, with a hint of a?native New York accent.
The MP4-12C has received something of a mixed reception since its introduction.?Few fault the two-seater?s 600-horsepower, 3.8-liter V-8, which can propel it 125 mph in 8.9 seconds and a top speed of 205 mph.? More controversial is a styling strategy one might call function over form.? ?The MP4 suffers from an obvious lack of sex appeal,? sniffs Car and Driver magazine in an otherwise rave review.
For his part, McLaren design chief Frank Stephenson downplays such criticism, contending that with the MP4 he went for ?timeless efficiency.??Also, as an American who has spent a lot of time overseas, Stephenson insists he didn?t want to simply repeat the work he did as styling boss at Ferrari, where he oversaw efforts such as the Italian maker?s 612 Scaglietti. The goal was to focus on maximizing performance, Stephenson describing the MP4 as ?a ground-hugging, aerodynamic missile.?
Whether it can blow competitors like Ferrari and Lamborghini out of the way remains to be seen, but McLaren?s ambitions are only slightly less single-minded than they are on the track.?Sheriff readily acknowledges his company won?t outsell Ferrari anytime soon, but it intends to give a good chase. ?
The British maker already has the capacity to produce about 1,500 vehicles annually at what could loosely be called an ?assembly plant,? a spotless facility near its U.K. headquarters. Eventually, he declares, ?We?ll have the capacity to build three times as much.?
Development work on the MP4-12C and subsequent models is handled at a striking, virtually all-glass facility in Woking, Surrey, England designed by Lord Norman Foster and meant to look, with the surrounding, carefully manicured grounds, like the yin/yang symbol.?
Traditionally, automakers justify their involvement in motor sports, at least to some degree, by suggesting their street cars benefit from the lessons of the track, and Sheriff insists that?s clearly true for McLaren.
?This interchange between F1 technology and road technology is real,? he says, noting the racing and production car teams ?are 50 yards away from one another.? This encourages a very different approach to developing cars.?
As on the track, he contends, McLaren ?has to be courageous,? willing to take aim at new technologies that can give it a clear advantage over the competition.? ?If we came to market just doing the same things as everyone else, why would you buy a McLaren??
The MP4 introduces a new hydraulic suspension system that actually does deliver go-kart like handling.? But perhaps the most significant breakthrough is the work the maker has done with ultra-light carbon fiber, a high-cost material that has, until now, seen only limited use in production cars.?
To craft the cockpit ?tub? on the old McLaren F1 required 3,000 hours of labor -- a major factor in the supercar?s 7-figure price tag.? On the $400,000 SLR it still took 400 hours.? ?Believe it or not, we got it down to four hours on this car,? boasts Stephenson, noting that the material has not only resulted in a rock-stiff chassis but helped hold the overall weight of the MP4-12C to about 2,900 pounds.
?We?ve got a car that has to be driven to fully appreciate,? contends Tony Schwartz, who operates McLaren?s Beverly Hills showroom, one of 10 in the U.S.
One product might make it difficult to support a business case, but Managing Director Sheriff reveals, ?We?re actively developing five or six variants and new models that will be rolled out at the rate of one a year for the foreseeable future.?
Few would argue with the performance bona fides of the new MP4-12C, even if they quibble over its styling.? The question is whether McLaren can crack into the exclusive world of high-performance supercars dominated by the likes of Ferrari, Lamborghini and Aston Martin.? But if there?s one thing obvious it?s that the British brand has a long tenacious history.? And the willpower behind its efforts on the track is readily apparent as it takes its skills to the street.

Former Kadhafi spymaster arrested in Mauritania
Abdullah al-Senussi, former spymaster of Libya's slain dictator Moamer Kadhafi, was arrested in Mauritania, prompting calls Saturday for his extradition by Tripoli and Paris.
The former intelligence chief and right-hand man to Kadhafi was arrested at Nouakchott airport after arriving on a regular flight from Casablanca in Morocco, a Mauritanian security source said.
Senussi, 62, who is also wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC), was travelling on a fake Malian passport. He was taken to the national intelligence agency's office, the source said.
Long feared in Libya, he is wanted in The Hague for crimes committed while trying to crush last year's uprising, while France has convicted him in absentia over the downing of an airliner that claimed 170 lives.
Mauritanian police said that before considering any extradition requests, they want to investigate him with Interpol. They did not say how long the investigation might take before the requests are examined.
Libyan government spokesman Salal al-Manaa said Tripoli wanted Senussi extradited "to give him a fair trial in Libya", and that the prosecutor general had sent an extradition request through Interpol.
Manaa said the former spymaster was accompanied at the time of his arrest "by someone who is believed to be his son".
French President Nicolas Sarkozy hailed the arrest and will seek Senussi's extradition, his office said.
Senussi's arrest was "the result of joint efforts by the French and Mauritanian authorities, of which the Libyan authorities were kept informed", the statement added.
Senussi faced an international arrest warrant after a Paris court sentenced him in absentia to life for involvement in the downing of a French airliner in 1989 that killed 170 people, said the Elysee statement.
The UTA airliner on a flight from Brazzaville to Paris via N'Djamena was brought down by a bomb on September 19, 1989 in Niger.
This attack -- along with that a year earlier against a PanAm jumbo jet over Lockerbie, Scotland, in which 270 people were killed -- led to a UN-mandated air blockade of Libya in 1992.
British Foreign Secretary William Hague also welcomed Senussi's capture.
"Like others who have sought to evade justice, he must now be held to account for his actions and face trial on the charges brought against him," he said in a statement.
He also called on Nouakchott to cooperate with the ICC.
Senussi, a brother-in-law of Kadhafi, is wanted by the ICC in The Hague for what it alleges was his "crucial" role in trying to crush the country's popular revolt last year.
The ICC issued an arrest warrant for Senussi on June 27, saying he was an "indirect perpetrator of crimes against humanity, of murder and persecution based on political grounds" committed in northeastern Benghazi.
ICC spokesman Fadi al-Abdallah told AFP on Saturday the court had not yet received official information of his arrest.
Mauritania was not a party to the treaty that set up the court, "but like all UN member states, it has been asked by the Security Council to cooperate with the ICC," he added.
The families of victims of the UTA flight expressed satisfaction at the news.
"We have never lost hope of seeing those responsible for the attack put on trial," Guillaume Denoix de Saint Marc, their association's president, said in a statement.
Senussi could also be held accountable in Libya for the Abu Salim prison massacre of 1996 when more than 1,000 detainees were gunned down.
The spy chief, a heavy-set man with a thick jawline and bushy black eyebrows, spent several months on the run before his capture.
Security sources in Niger and Mali said in October that Senussi and several of his men passed through their territory.
A month later, Libya's new government announced his arrest but never ended up confirming it.
Long considered Kadhafi's right-hand man, Senussi remained faithful to the end to the man who ruled Libya with an iron fist for 42 years.
On August 21, the day rebels stormed Tripoli, Senussi made a rare appearance at the Rixos Hotel, headquarters of the foreign media in the capital, to denounce NATO's bombing campaign.
He said the alliance, which had bombed his Tripoli home days earlier, worked with Western intelligence and Al-Qaeda "to destroy Libya", vowing defiantly: "Libya will not be ruled by bands of terrorists."

Joshua Ledet Receives Standing O on American Idol
From a giant tub of crawfish to a standing ovation for all in attendance, it was a good night for Joshua Ledet on Wednesday.
The American Idol finalist first received a gift of those creatures from his friends in Louisiana, and then proceeded to gift viewers with a beautiful cover of Michael Bolton's "When a Man Loves a Woman."
He hit every note and every emotion, forcing Jennifer, Steven and Randy out of their seats long before the song even ended. The former said it was "the best thing I've ever seen on American Idol."

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) ? Peyton Manning's whirlwind free-agency tour kicked off in grand fashion Friday, complete with a chartered plane coming to pick him up and a helicopter hovering overhead as he met with the Denver Broncos.
And this was only Day 1 of his adventure.
Manning spent the day in Tim Tebow's neighborhood, chatting with the Broncos for nearly six hours.
The four-time MVP is the NFL's marquee free agent after being released by the Indianapolis Colts two days ago. The Broncos rolled out the red carpet for Manning's visit, too.
Brought in from Miami on a plane sent down to swoop him up, Manning spent the day with Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway, who also serves as Denver's vice president of football operations. Manning was escorted around the building, with coach John Fox and general manager Brian Xanders along as well.
When his marathon day was over, Manning hopped into the same silver SUV he arrived in and was whisked away without talking to reporters.
His next stop? There are more than a half-dozen other suitors, with Arizona and Miami among those expressing interest.
But spending the first day in Denver certainly made for some interesting conversation. After all, this is a city still engulfed in Tebowmania, especially after the unorthodox quarterback led the Broncos to the playoffs for the first time in six seasons.
But having Manning in for a visit raised anew the question that has hovered over the team: Is Tebow a long-term solution or just a feel-good story for a season?
As news spread of Manning's arrival ? with reporters and TV helicopters covering every inch of the Broncos facility ? a handful of curious fans started making their way over.
"Let's do it, Peyton," one of them yelled through a gate upon spotting Manning walking out of the weight room. He glanced over and gave a quick wave.
Across the parking lot, one fan with an Elway jersey, another with a Tebow jersey and a few more with Manning's iconic Colts No. 18 showed up.
"Peyton Manning is a terrific leader. He has amazing aim and seems to have a sixth sense of what's going to happen on the field. He's phenomenal to watch," said Graham Millar, a lifelong Colts fan who lives in Aurora, Colo. "You feel like you're watching a psychic. But it's preparation. He knows exactly what to expect from every single player on that field."
According to The Denver Post, the Broncos sent a plane to pick up Manning in South Florida, where he has a condo. He had traveled there after an emotional news conference in Indianapolis on Wednesday, when he said goodbye to the team that drafted him No. 1 overall in 1998 and he led to the 2007 Super Bowl championship.
The plane then stopped in Stillwater, Okla., where Elway, Fox and Xanders were watching Oklahoma State's pro day. The Broncos management met up with Manning, and everyone flew back to Denver.
ESPNews carried live coverage of the flight arriving at an airport in Denver, then also followed Manning's car ride to Broncos team headquarters. And while Manning met with Elway and Co., inside the building, a blue helicopter hovered overhead outside.
This was only the beginning.
Arizona, Miami, Kansas City, Seattle, Tennessee and Washington are among the other possible destinations, as Manning becomes one of the most coveted free agents in the history of the league, even though he turns 36 later this month and is coming off a series of neck operations. He missed all of last season, and the Colts decided to cut ties rather than pay a $28 million bonus that was due this week.
It's not often that teams get a chance to sign a quarterback who has thrown for more than 50,000 yards and nearly 400 touchdowns, been picked for 11 Pro Bowls, and been a Super Bowl MVP. Manning's importance to the Colts' success was never more apparent than last season, when their record plummeted to 2-14 without him.
Because he was released and went on the waiver wire Wednesday, Manning is allowed to negotiate and sign with any club immediately; he does not need to wait until the free-agent period that begins Tuesday.
Chiefs owner Clark Hunt confirmed in an interview with NBC Sports Network that was scheduled to air Friday evening that his team is pursuing Manning.
"I don't know how important money will be to him, but I'm sure it will be part of the equation," Hunt said. "He's going to be looking for an environment that he's comfortable in."
He declined to say whether the Chiefs already have offered Manning a contract.
"I don't think it would be appropriate for me to talk about discussions at this point," Hunt said, "but he is somebody that we'll want to talk to."
