Health and Fitness: Realize optimal health

"Optimum health is not just the absence of disease but the presence of wellness in mental, emotional, physical, spiritual and social areas. Some would also include financial health."

Introduction

We have to start thinking of wealth not just in terms of possession of money and properties but also the possession of mental, emotional, physical, social and spiritual well-being.

Mental Health

The truth is mind is the forerunner of all states.

With a proper mindset, a poor man can still be happy. It provides clarity of thoughts, good insight and the ability to see things through an unbiased mind.It is extremely difficult to note or observe the unfolding of events and phenomena without judging. We habitually associate emotions or feelings to events, and allow such emotions to direct our actions.

Emotional Health

It is our emotions that lead us to act impulsively at times. Thus a high level of self-awareness in this area is extremely useful. In fact, it is essential to our well-being. There are positive and negative emotions. Positive emotions such as love, compassion and joy should be cultivated, while negative emotions such as fear, anger and hate need to be eradicated.
One is love and compassion. The other is fear and anger."

The young boy asked, "Which one will win, grandfather?" The old man replied, "The one I feed." The truth is how well we manage our emotions depends on how aware we are of our emotions, particularly on the arising of our emotions.

Our body's immune system is generally enhanced by positive mental outlook and emotion. Conversely, it is depressed by negative mental and emotional states. Thus, stress, worry, anger and fear are some states that may lead to physical illnesses such as hypertension, cardiac diseases, peptic ulcers, depression and a host of other ailments.

Physical Health

To maintain an optimum physical well-being, therefore, requires us to focus not only on our body but also our mind and emotions.

On a physical level, our body can be kept healthy through adequate sleep and rest, proper nutrition, regular exercises and a healthy environment that is free from pollution.

Spiritual Health

Throughout the ages, wise men have consistently informed and taught us that we are essentially spiritual beings.
Stories from people who had gone through a near death experience (NDE), or dying people with heightened nearing death awareness, or simply a cure from an 'incurable' disease all suggest that there is more to life than just the physical state.

Major religions of the world all based their teachings on the belief that we are essentially spiritual beings. According to these teachings, our physical existence is secondary.

Financial Health

Practically, therefore, we need to look into ways to achieve a financial state that would theoretically free us from the constrain of 'forced' work. To become an investor or a business owner, you must spend the time and money to acquire financial intelligence. Unlike IQ or EQ, you can acquire financial intelligence through self education.

To get a financial health check-up, consult an accountant, a banker or a financial planner you can trust.

Healthy Relationship

As a medical doctor, I am in a unique position to confront and comfort dying patients. It is as though there is an inherent need to get a proper closure to a relationship.

(AP) ? Didier Drogba tied the match with a header in the 88th minute, and then scored the decisive goal in the shootout as Chelsea beat Bayern Munich to win the Champions League final, 4-3 on penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw Saturday.

The unlikely storyline of an English team beating a German team on penalties in a high-profile match provided a fitting end to a dramatic night, as Chelsea became Europe's champion club for the first time.

The often theatrical 34-year-old Drogba, playing possibly his last game for the club as his Chelsea contract expires next month, was at the heart of the show.

Drogba sent goalkeeper Manuel Neuer the wrong way on the final kick of the shootout in front of massed Bayern fans in their home Allianz Arena. Bayern's Bastian Schweinsteiger missed the previous penalty, hitting the goalpost.

"It was written, I think, a long time ago," Drogba said to British broadcaster ITV of Chelsea's turnaround since its turmoil in March. "This team is amazing. They never give up until the end."

The shootout was needed after Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech saved Arjen Robben's spot-kick early in extra time.

It was awarded for a foul by Drogba, who earned Chelsea an unlikely reprieve.

After 83 minutes of Bayern domination, Thomas Mueller broke dogged Chelsea resistance with a header past the outstanding Cech.

Chelsea's first Champions League title came four years after losing in a shootout to Manchester United.

Drogba succeeded where his captain John Terry, who was suspended for Saturday's finale, failed in missing the fifth penalty in Moscow four years ago which would have given the club's Russian owner Roman Abramavich the Champions League title he has craved.

Abramovich must now make a fascinating decision on the future of interim coach Roberto di Matteo, who took over from the fired Andre Villas-Boas after a last-16, first-leg defeat to Napoli, and inspired a team which then appeared sulky and fading.

Victory also sealed Chelsea's last remaining route into next season's competition which is crucial to its elite status and finances.

Everything seemed stacked against Chelsea when Bayern won the toss to send the shootout to the home, south end of its stadium.

After Bayern captain Philipp Lahm scored first, Juan Mata has his kick saved by Neuer.

Cech then saved Ivica Olic's fourth penalty for Bayern to put the otherwise excellent Schweinsteiger in the spotlight.

He struck the post to Cech's left and covered his face with his shirt.

Drogba stepped up and sealed victory and awaited the adulation of his onrushing teammates.

"He's a hero. Without him we're not here," said Lampard, who scored with Chelsea's third penalty. "I'd love him to stay. What he did tonight he's been doing all his career."

With seven starters from the two teams suspended, Bayern settled quickly against a visiting team set up to absorb pressure.

The Germans' tempo was often dictated by Schweinsteiger, who excelled after collecting a needless yellow card in the second minute for handball.

Toni Kroos, Mario Gomez and Robben all failed to find the target, and anxiety rose in the Chelsea defense when Jose Bosingwa's miscue conceded a corner.

Robben, the former Chelsea winger, threatened again in the 21st when he wriggled through a tiny gap to create a left-footed shooting chance. So often Chelsea's Champions League savior, Cech blocked with his right leg and deflected the ball high up against his right post.

Drogba was being kept quiet before he linked with Frank Lampard to create Chelsea's first good chance in the 37th. Salomon Kalou was teed up to shoot low but Neuer's save was solid.

Gomez, with 13 goals in the competition this season, then wasted two good chances to draw level with Barcelona's Lionel Messi.

First, his control failed when Ribery's misdirected shot flew to his feet, then the big forward wrong-footed Gary Cahill but shot high and wide.

Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes stomped back to the bench throwing his hands in the air.

The second half resumed with the same pattern, and Cole's outstanding defending denied Robben.

The England left-back hunted down Robben's break, then blocked the Dutchman's clear sight of goal from 10 yards (meters) in the 54th. The loose ball found Ribery in an offside position before he thought he'd opened the scoring.

Cole repeated his heroics five minutes later, dashing across to block Robben's shot from 15 yards.

In the 76th, Cech stretched to tip the ball over the bar as Ribery's cross at the goal line squirted up from Cole's lunging challenge.

Cole was then booked for fouling Mueller, who responded by directing a header which Cech gathered.

One minute later, Mueller eluded Cole with a late run and headed home to spark delirious celebrations among the Bayern players and fans.

They underestimated Chelsea's admirable resolve, and Drogba soared to score with a header that Neuer couldn't keep out.

Drogba's taste for the dramatic flared up in the third minute of extra time, as he clipped Ribery's heels in the penalty area.

Referee Pedro Proenca's decision to point to the spot seemed to stun the Bayern fans, and their anxiety was well founded.

Robben fired low to Cech's left, and the Czech 'keeper blocked with his arm and body, then reached across to collect the loose ball.

Bayern came agonizingly close in the 108th, when substitute Olic slipped the ball across the goalmouth but teammate Daniel van Buyten failed to anticipate the simple tap-in.

Blind Chinese activist leaves Beijing for U.S.

BEIJING (Reuters) - China allowed a blind legal activist, Chen Guangcheng, to leave a hospital in Beijing on Saturday and board a plane bound for the United States, a move that could signal the end of a diplomatic standoff between the two countries.

Chen's escape from house arrest in northeastern China last month and subsequent stay in the U.S. embassy caused huge embarrassment for China and led to a diplomatic rift while U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was visiting Beijing for talks to improve ties between the world's two biggest economies.

The U.S. State Department said he was en route to the United States, along with his wife and two children. He boarded a United Airlines flight bound for Newark.

China's Foreign Ministry limited its commentary to an acknowledgement that Chen had left the country.

"Chen Guangcheng is a Chinese citizen. China's relevant departments have handled the procedures for exiting the country in accordance with the law," the ministry said in a faxed statement to Reuters.

New York University said in a statement on Saturday that Chen would study as a fellow at its School of Law.

"I am very happy to receive the news that Chen Guangcheng is on his way to the U.S. I look forward ... to working with him on his course of study," said Jerome Cohen, co-director of the U.S.-Asia Law Institute at New York University School of Law.

State news agency Xinhua said earlier that Chen had applied to study in the United States under legal procedures. The Foreign Ministry said this month that Chen could apply to study abroad, a move seen as a way of easing Sino-U.S. tensions on human rights.

Chen's friend, Jiang Tianyong, cited the activist, one of China's most prominent dissidents, as saying that he and his family obtained their passports at the airport hours before he was due to board a flight.

"I'm obviously very happy," Jiang said. "When he boards the plane, he can finally say: 'I'm free'. At the same time, I feel a sense of regret because such a large country like China can't even tolerate a citizen like him to exist here."

A statement by State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland struck a conciliatory note, saying Washington was "looking forward" to Chen's arrival.

"We also express our appreciation for the manner in which we were able to resolve this matter and to support Mr. Chen's desire to study in the U.S. and pursue his goals," it said.

U.S. President Barack Obama's administration had feared a standoff over Chen's fate could sour already strained ties with China and generate criticism of Obama's policies. Beijing has accused Washington of meddling in its affairs in the case.

Chen's abrupt departure for the airport came nearly three weeks after he arrived at the Chaoyang Hospital from the U.S. embassy, where he had taken refuge after an escape from 19 months under house arrest in his home village.

Chen, 40, who taught himself law, was a leading advocate of the rights defense movement. He gained prominence by campaigning for farmers and disabled citizens and exposing forced abortions.

He was jailed for a little more than four years from 2006 on what he and his supporters say were trumped-up charges designed to end his rights advocacy.

He had accused Shandong officials in 2005 of forcing women to have late-term abortions and sterilizations to comply with strict family-planning policies. Authorities moved against him with charges of whipping up a crowd that disrupted traffic and damaged property.

Formally released in 2010, he remained under house arrest in his home village, which officials turned into a fortress of walls, security cameras and guards in plainclothes guards.

POLICE AT THE AIRPORT

United Airlines flight UA 88 departed around 5.50 p.m. (0950 GMT), with police officers and plainclothes officers following passengers down the mobile corridor leading to the plane's door.

The cabin crew waited for passengers to take their seats before closing the curtain to the front section, where the business class seats were located, a Reuters witness said.

Chen had earlier told Reuters he was at the airport along with his wife, two children and hospital staff and he believed he would be put on a flight to the United States.

Two police cars were stationed below the walkway to the plane, and about 10 security officials in plainclothes circulated around the airport.

Passengers at the gate to Chen's flight appeared not to know that he would be on the same flight.

"If our country is a body, his plight is like a sickness that in the future will help the body to protect and strengthen itself," said Xi Jingwen, who was awaiting to board a flight to the United States, when asked about Chen Guangcheng.

Chen's confinement, his escape and the furor that ensued have made him part of China's dissident folklore: a blind prisoner outfoxing Communist Party controls in an echo of the man who stood down an army tank near Tiananmen Square in 1989.

The Chen case comes at a tricky time for China, which is engaged in a leadership change. The carefully choreographed transition has already been knocked out of step by the downfall of ambitious senior Communist Party official Bo Xilai in a scandal linked to the apparent murder of a British businessman.

On a number of occasions in recent years, authorities have relented to diplomatic pressure and allowed high-profile dissidents to leave China, knowing that its most vocal critics are effectively neutralized once they leave and are without support of friends.

At times, Beijing has appeared to use these deals as bargaining chips in broader diplomatic negotiations or to blunt criticism of its human rights record.

Chen's supporters, however, welcomed his departure, saying he had indicated that he would like to return to China.

"I even told him ... that he has to do a repeat of him scaling walls. If not, we wouldn't be able to believe it," Nanjing-based activist He Peirong said of her earlier conversation with Chen. She was one of six activists who drove Chen from Shandong to Beijing after his escape.

Phelim Kine, senior Asia researcher at New York-based Human Rights Watch, said "getting Chen Guangcheng and his family on a plane is the easiest part of this saga.

"The harder, longer term part is ensuring his right under international law to return to China when he sees fit," Kine said in an emailed statement.

Kine urged Western countries to ensure that Chen's relatives, friends and supporters secured due protection.

The U.S. embassy had earlier thought it had stuck a deal to allow Chen to stay in China without retribution, but that fell apart as Chen grew worried about his family's safety. He changed his mind about staying and asked to travel to the United States.

Human rights are a big factor in relations between China and the United States, even though Washington needs China's help on issues such as Iran, North Korea, Sudan and the global economy.

The village of Dongshigu, where Chen's mother and other relatives remain, is still under lockdown.

Chen's nephew, Chen Kegui, was denied his family's choice of lawyers on Friday to defend a charge of "intentional homicide", the latest in a series of moves to deny him legal representation, and underscores the hardline stance taken against the blind dissident's family.

What Is Progressive Publishing?

What is progressive publishing?

It is online printing or self-publication where the author enjoys all the rights regarding choosing the design, selecting the layout and finalizing the content presentation. In this type of printing, the author is the sole decision maker and he chooses how his work should be presented to the readers.

The flexibility an online publication gives to the authors is not available with traditional publishers who take all the rights from the authors and give them nothing in terms of royalty. Many authors have complained to the authorities about the autocratic way of traditional publishers but the printers work on their own terms and conditions.

There are incidents when authors take the publishers to court to settle royalty issues.

Royalty is the only source of income of the authors and they should get the lion?s share. But in reality they get just a fraction of the profit publishers earn by selling their works. The publishers argue that they design, print and market books hence they deserve a bigger share.

Progressive publishing helps the authors get their works published and sold to the Internet population. When it comes to paying the royalty, the online publishers give the highest. An author can expect as much as 50% royalty on retail business and up to 25% wholesale. A book sold at $5 would bring $5 royalty to the author. Working the online book printers is quite convenient for the authors as everything is done online.

The biggest advantage of publishing books with online publishers is that they provide yearly update facility. For instance an author wants to do some updates on his bestselling book. He can just inform his online publisher and get the book updated at no extra cost. On the other hand, the traditional printer would ask the author to enter into a separate contract for the updated work.

Traditional printers try to earn as much money from authors as they can and this is evident from the annual charge the get from the authors for keeping their work. But progressive publishing houses take not annual charge from the writers. Additionally they allow the writers to take their work to anywhere for publishing or selling.

Another advantage of progressive publishing is that it is technology driven. Online publishers use Internet marketing for promoting books. They create websites, distribute press releases telling about the launch of books and they also pursue book reviewers for reviewing the books.

Business Slow At Homeland Security Trade Show Even As Industry ...

WASHINGTON ? More than a decade after 9/11, it isn?t easy to theatre a ?first-of-its-kind? eventuality centered on homeland confidence and counterterrorism.

Yet that?s what a organizers of a two-day Counter Terror Expo called their uncover during a Washington Convention Center this week. While a expo does symbol a U.S. entrance for a Britishtrade uncover company, it is among a proliferation of homeland-security-industrial formidable gatherings that have mushroomed given a attacks and far from a largest.

?Counter-terrorism has turn a illusion in a U.S.,? Robert Grenier, a former executive of a CIA?s Counterterrorism Center, wrote in an email to The Huffington Post. Noting that in 2010 there were ?two American deaths from terrorism worldwide, outward of Afghanistan,? compared with some-more than 32,000 Americans failing in trade accidents during home in 2011, he said, ?terrorism competence in fact be a poignant tellurian problem, yet it is not quite an American problem.?

?The reason we concentration so obsessively on terrorism is since it is voluptuous and splashy, and plays to entrenched fears,? Grenier wrote. ?And a reason we have a outrageous counter-terror infrastructure with hundreds of use vendors is precisely since a American people and a U.S. media seem to direct it.?

Indeed, there are so many homeland-security trade shows and conferences that one determined outfit, POLICE-TREXPO, recently canceled a dual annual events ?due to tough mercantile times and competition.? Said Leslie Pfeiffer, POLICE-TREXPO?s chair: ?It?s an intensely swarming market.?

Gone are a heady days right after 9/11 when billions of dollars in homeland-security grants flowed out of Washington tointernal initial responders to compensate for new apparatus and training. Since then, spending cuts have left internal governments with timorous resources to buy new gadgets or say or reinstate apparatus that?s now reaching a finish of a useful life.

?The exhibits are fine,? pronounced John Morrissey, troops arch of Kenosha, Wis., ?if we have a funding.? But his midsize city does not, and with federal officials focused on some-more high-risk areas, he doubts that will change anytime soon.

Morrissey was one of 1,000 people purebred for Counter Terror Expo, that finished Thursday. Visits to a expo on Wednesday and Thursday, however, indicated distant fewer people erratic among a scarcely 100 exhibitor booths on a 50,000-square-foot salon floor. The scary still was punctuated usually by occasional blasts from proof aim pistols and a buzz of remote-controlled bomb-disposal robots.

?This is substantially one of a misfortune I?ve been to in years,? pronounced Jason Henry of Field Forensics, a Florida manufacturer of explosives and hazardous-material-detection inclination that was incorporated in Sep 2001. ?Nobody?s walking a show.?

?It was not as good attended as we expected,? pronounced Mark Anderson, a deputy of FLIR, that manufactures worldly thermal imaging apparatus for troops and a troops and was an eventuality cosponsor. Anderson has celebrated timorous assemblage during other trade shows over a past dual years, he said, adding that fewer supervision agencies can means to send employees to attention events.

Still, according to one private estimate, homeland confidence is still a expansion industry, with federal, state and internal governments and businesses approaching to spend $205 billion by 2014. At a same time, a Pentagon is formulation pointy cuts in invulnerability spending as a conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan breeze down.

?Unless a fight pops adult somewhere else, a homeland confidence goal will turn many some-more important,? pronounced John Gritschke, a manager for Laser Shot, a Texas-based builder of training videos. Last year a association did $20 million inbusiness with a sovereign government. Most of it was with a military, that enclosed a training of some-more than 10,000 soldiers during Fort Hood how to respond if their convoys were strike by a roadside bomb.

At a expo, though, attendees during a Laser Shot counter took turns banishment a thermal pistol during practical warrant takers who were enacting a real-life unfolding on a vast video screen. ?You missed her,? a deputy told a male only before a onscreen womanlike militant blew herself up. Told by a caller that a $25,000 setup resembled a video game, Gritschke bristled. ?This is for training, not for playing,? he said. Among his newest customers: U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Military contractors, aware of entrance invulnerability cuts, pronounced they hoped to collect adult homeland confidence customers, stability a new militarization trend among law enforcement agencies. There were companies offered military-grade thermal and night-vision gun sights variable for troops use and booths featuring bomb-squad robots and other explosive-disposal apparatus true out of ?The Hurt Locker.?

At one booth, group in fight rigging hold what looked like troops weapons yet were indeed airsoft rifles. Strikeforce Sports, a pro emporium and aim operation on New York?s Long Island, came to a expo in a hopes of rebranding itself as a training core for troops and other initial responders. That competence be tough, given that some troops departments have attempted to anathema a feign firearms, that fire cosmetic pellets and are used in unnatural troops games. Still, Strikeforce Sports? Greg Heddell sees an opportunity. ?We would adore to have a agreement with Homeland Security,? he said.

More normal exhibitors hawked little X-ray scanners designed for supervision buildings, biological and chemical detectors, data-mapping systems for situational recognition and interoperable radios. There were companies that done outrageous anti-ram barriers and firms that sole little bomb detector swipes. Also benefaction were member from schools charity degrees in homeland security, including a University of St. Andrews, where Britain?s Prince William romanced his destiny queen. The propagandize offers a certificate in terrorism studies.

Several exhibitors were from a sepulchral cybersecurity business. One was Hacking Team, an Italian organisation that provides an ?offensive net hacking suite? for rising cyberattacks. The company?s sharp leaflet touts a ?remote control system? that can ?defeat encryption and acquire applicable data,? such as email and ?relationships.?

?You?ve listened of wiretapping? This is wiretapping of a future,? pronounced Hacking Team comment manager Alex Velasco, who declined to name his supervision customers.

Despite a low assemblage during a expo, many exhibitors pronounced business was good. And that endangered Benjamin Friedman, a investigate associate in invulnerability and homeland confidence studies during a libertarian Cato Institute.

?Our panicked response to 9/11 has done a kind of self-licking ice cream that tries to keep us worrying about terrorism and sells us defenses opposite it,? Friedman settled around email. ?This discussion is a little partial of that.?

?The good news is that purgation has meant that there is reduction income for homeland security, timorous a homeland confidence industrial formidable and bringing it into increasing foe with a distant bigger cousin, a troops industrial complex,? Friedman added.

Whether it?s fight fighters or cops, Patricia Schmaltz of Virginia-based A-T Solutions sees a colourful marketplace for her company?s antiterrorism training classes. ?I don?t see assent on Earth entrance anytime soon,? she said.

?We would really support it yet we don?t see it,? Schmaltz said. ?So prolonged as there are bad guys and nutcakes out there, we?ll be in business.?

Forty Euros for Paella!

Still, given the dire conditions in Spain or Greece, you might wonder why prices there don?t fall even in the absence of currency adjustments. Why don?t Spaniards and Greeks start charging a lot less for their goods and services? It turns out that prices are ?sticky? (i.e., resistant to change) and especially sticky in the downward direction. Some price stickiness derives simply from what are called ?menu costs,? in reference to the fact that it would be expensive for a restaurant to print up a whole new set of menus to reflect a minor shift in prices driven by a small increase in the price of food. And think about how you would act in your own life if you suddenly needed to decrease expenditures by 5 percent in response to some bad news. You couldn?t just phone up everyone to whom you owe a fixed sum?your bank or landlord, your cell phone company and cable provider, your auto and health insurers?and try to bargain them down 5 percent. Rather than diminishing expenditures proportionately, you just need to lop some stuff off. Brew your coffee at home instead of wasting money at Starbucks, start packing your lunches, and generally buy less stuff. The problem for an economy in which a whole bunch of people are doing this is that your spending is my income. Individuals cut off whole categories of purchase, and declining firms try to cauterize wounds by shutting entire factories. The growing army of the unemployed does tend to prevent wage increases, but in general the quantity of economic output declines much faster than the prices charged for the remaining output.

Online Auctions | Online Business Expert Articles

?

Online auctions have become an increasingly accessible way of shopping via the internet. They offer a huge variety of products which are available at consumers? fingertips, and in the comfort of their own homes. Sellers can sell unwanted items that might otherwise be thrown away.

This type of consumer buying continues to evolve, and is extremely popular and successful in today?s competitive marketplace.

There are two main attractions to online auctions. Firstly, the consumer is often able to secure an item at a lower price than it would be made available for in high street chains. Secondly, online auction sites offer an exciting and stimulating way of shopping. ?Bidders? enjoy the competition for products; a ?win? can be exhilarating, as well as being conveniently carried out without having to drive to an external location. In today?s society, competitive online shopping is becoming ever popular.

The most successful internet auctions are those that are easily accessible, are open to as many bidders as possible, and are straightforward to follow. An online auction is often active for a number of hours, during which bidders ?bid? for the product they want. They are usually allowed to withdraw from the proceedings at any time if they desire. Bidders who are more experienced can place bids at several sites at once, and will use software that tracks their status at each online auction.

There are basically two main types of auction process: Forward and Reverse.

Forward Auctions

In forward auctions, bidders who offer the highest bid win the item. The seller will put up the items available to buy and bidders will begin competing for these, thus driving the price up. Sellers might fix a reserve price so that sales do not fall below this. These types of online auctions are well known for selling and buying collectibles but also may sell business to business.

Auction sites have their own rules, such as whether sellers need a certain business accreditation to take part and whether to set a registration fee before use. Another consideration will be how payment is made; either between the parties involved or through the site itself. Seller profiles are established and rewarded by the more they sell and the more reliable they prove themselves in terms of delivery and quality.

Reverse auctions (Dutch Auctions)

In this type of auction, bidders who offer the lowest bid wins the item (the ?item? in reverse auctions is usually a contract for business). The event itself will last for a matter of just a few hours. Reverse auctions are important for supply chains (particularly electronic) and are viewed as a money saving exercise. These reverse auctions are becoming an increasingly popular way to do business through the internet.

Auction Sites

There are numerous auction sites currently operating online.

Many of these sites are not geared towards a particular specialised area; they can be visited and used to buy and sell almost any general item imaginable. Products are stored within categories, alphabetically, or consumers have the option of using the search tool to locate an exact match. Once the product is found, information, as well as numbers in stock, will be displayed.

Some auction sites will conduct the bidding on a buyer?s behalf if instructed to. They may also include a ?Buy Now? feature that allows the buyer to opt out of the auction and purchase the product immediately at the displayed price.

Dedicated sites will offer a more specialised service for direct-niche items, for example if buyers are looking for products such as artwork, guns, coins, jewellery or vintage clothing etc, these can be easily located through the internet?s search engines. Again, consumers are able to search through categories or enter keywords to find a niche product quickly, which they are then able to bid on. Many direct-niche sites also offer the option to purchase items without bidding.

Penny Auctions

Also known as ?bidding fee? auctions, these sites offer an exciting way of buying and selling online, providing the consumer with a retail incentive as well as entertainment value. Penny auctions enable consumers to often get products that are very popular at low prices.

Bidders pay a non-refundable fee and receive a pack of bids before the auction begins, at a set price (a fixed step to ensure fairness). They then place their individual bids and hope to be the player with the last wager before time runs out. With each bid placed on an auction, the timer increases. When the clock stops, the last person to place their bid wins the product and pays the final price for it, which is often very low.

Many consumers enjoy penny auctions because of the competition involved in the bidding process, as well as the sealed end product, approved by a company.

Products that can be bid on in these auctions range from laptops, phones and home appliances to gift vouchers and more. Savings of 70%, and sometimes more, can be made on items.

The success of the penny auction lies within its clear competitive shopping element, and the time it takes to place a bid. Bidders may send short numbers by text message to place their bid (effectively reducing the time it takes) or they may visit the penny auction site and place their bid this way. Many of the sites offer automatic bidding systems to save further time.

By visiting different sites and watching auctions in action, as well as reading reviews on specific sites, consumers will gain a good understanding of which penny auctions are the best to take part in.

Pay-Per-Bid Auctions

These offer bidders the chance of paying for an individual bid before the auction commences, then to add additional bids if they wish, to increase their chance of winning the product. A display will let bidders know their progress within the auction and further bids can be entered. With each bid placed, the value of the product increases as well as the countdown.

House OKs GOP's anti-violence against women bill

WASHINGTON (AP) ? House Republicans set up a showdown Wednesday with the Senate and President Barack Obama over legislation to protect women from domestic violence, a fight that's become as much about female voters this election year as cracking down on abuse.

The House voted 222-205 to reauthorize the 1994 Violence Against Women Act for five years, as the Senate already had done. But big differences remain: Obama, other Democrats and a long list of advocacy groups say the House bill doesn't go far enough to protect abused immigrants, Native Americans or gays. Republicans say their bill does more to protect taxpayers from fraud and maintains the constitutionality of law enforcement procedures on Indian land.

It's unclear whether the differences will be reconciled before the November elections, or whether the bills will be used as campaign weapons.

But a pair of domestic violence survivors who fell on opposite sides of the debate reminded their House colleagues that for them and other abused women it's about far more than politics.

"The man I married had a penchant for drinking and was very violent when he drank," the bill's sponsor, freshman Rep. Sandy Adams, R-Fla., said during floor debate.

Wisconsin Democrat Gwen Moore recalled what it was like to try to press charges against her rapist in the days before the law's passage.

"I took him to court (but) indeed, I was on trial," Moore said. "I had to prove, as a victim, that I was not being fraudulent in my accusations. They brought up how I was an unwed mother with a baby. Maybe I seduced him. They talked about how I was dressed."

But in Washington this presidential and congressional election year, every issue is pressed for political advantage, even the government's main domestic violence-fighting law twice reauthorized with broad bipartisan support. Women account for the vast majority of domestic violence victims. They also account for the majority of voters in presidential election years and a critical bloc Democrats have tried to maintain in 2012 by accusing Republicans of waging a "war against women."

In a veto message issued late Tuesday before the House voted, the White House said the GOP-written bill takes "direct aim at immigrant victims of domestic violence and sexual assault" and jeopardizes victims by placing them "directly in harm's way."

Following the vote, Vice President Joe Biden said, "I urge Congress to come together to pass a bipartisan measure that protects all victims."

The 1994 anti-violence law provides millions of dollars to programs such as legal assistance for victims, enforcement of protection orders, transitional housing aid and youth prevention programs. Its 2005 reauthorization expired last year.

Majority Democrats in the Senate would expand the law to specifically protect gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender Americans from discrimination and abuse in a move many Republicans saw as a provocation to vote against a bill approved without objection previously. Senate Republicans also objected to Democratic provisions in the bill that would give tribal authorities the power to prosecute non-Indians for abuse committed on tribal lands, saying it was unconstitutional because the accused would have no role in shaping laws that could be used against them.

The Senate bill passed, 68-31, last month, with 15 Republicans voting yes.

Six Democrats voted for the House bill Wednesday: Reps. John Barrow of Georgia, Shelley Berkley of Nevada, Dan Boren of Oklahoma, Jim Matheson of Utah, Mike McIntyre of North Carolina and Collin Peterson of Minnesota.

On the eve of the House vote, Republicans revised Adams' measure to bring it closer to the Senate version. Gone, for example, was a provision that would have compromised the confidentiality of battered illegal immigrants who break from their partners, cooperate with law enforcement and apply for their own citizenship. But the White House said it still allows abusers to become aware of their victims' allegations.

Also still problematic for some were provisions that prevent Native American authorities to prosecute non-Indians who commit abuse on Indian land.

Under a 1978 Supreme Court decision, non-Indians cannot be prosecuted by tribal courts for crimes committed on tribal land. Last July, the Justice Department recommended that Congress give tribes local authority to prosecute non-Indians in misdemeanor domestic and dating violence cases.

Instead, the Republican version allows a battered Native American woman or a tribe on her behalf to file in U.S. District Court for a protection order against an alleged abuser, whether Indian or not, who committed the abuse on Indian land. But the White House and other Democrats want tribal courts to be able to prosecute the offenders.

The revised House version omits the Senate's references to gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgenders, a support-killer for advocates for those groups.

An armada of groups advocating for women, immigrants, Indians and gays said they were taking names and holding accountable lawmakers who vote for the Republican bill, arguing that such a vote was akin to voting against the Violence Against Women Act.

North Carolina Republican Virginia Fox said it pained her to hear Democrats accuse supporters of the bill of being uncaring toward battered women.

"Republican men and women both abhor violence against women," Fox said during the floor debate Wednesday. "I would say that we are more concerned against violence against women. ... We want to see the (federal) money spent better."

Commercial Real Estate Buying Or Selling Can Be Easy By ...

If you plan on getting in a commercial real estate lease, you should try to decrease the time the landlord has for rebuilding and repairing. The reason for this is because this will give the landlord a faster turnaround time for the repairs. In addition, this can give you a way to cancel the lease.

Ask your leasing agent about the company?s policy about returning your security deposit. Some companies will deduct cleaning costs, tear and wear regardless of the condition of your apartment when you move out. Have a clear picture about the fate of your deposit before you sign the lease, as you might lose a significant amount of money when you move out.

Before you put your real estate on the market or look at buying a new lot, make sure that you have consulted with the FHFA. This will help to give you a general idea of the value of the real estate from an impartial organization. Remember, however, that this value is definite but should be used merely as a guideline.

Before you rent your new house or apartment be sure you have enough references. Most landlords require at least three references. Check the names, addresses and phone numbers for accuracy. There is nothing worse than a reference whose name is incorrect, the phone line is disconnected or the letter the landlord sends comes back as undeliverable.

When attempting to get money from bank lenders for your commercial real estate investing needs, you should remember that you must always have financials statements for your business and yourself ready to present. Banks will always ask for this information, as to them it shows if you have any fiscal responsibility.

If you own commercial property, make sure you go out of your way to keep it a clean and safe place. If you have renters you want them to know that you care. If they think you don?t care they will not keep your house as nice as you would like. They would assume you don?t mind.

When you are financing commercial real estate to purchase, you should ensure you have every document that is needed. In addition, you should ensure they are accurate. The reason is: if you don?t have all the proper documents, lenders won?t be likely to lend you the money you need to purchase the real estate. Gather and file all the necessary documents ahead of time.

In order to protect yourself, make sure that the agreement that you and your broker decide on is put in writing. Add some conditions to it that will allow you to terminate them within five to ten days with a written notice if they are not doing their job well.

Weigh all your pros and cons. Do not delve into a purchase without first looking over all the good and bad things that will come with it. You may be over-budget or under-budget. The property may be perfect or have many flaws. Weighing your options will give you a clear head to make the best decision.

If you want to know much more than you presently do about selling commercial real estate so it could be a profitable career for your future, you can start with the advice in this article. Tap into a great market, and learn the selling strategies that top sellers are using for success today.

The Brainput project had researchers use a technique called "functional near-infrared" imaging to measure the activity of brains in test subjects.

Retirement is Work: #250: Family (History) Matters

One of the things that I fully intend to do as a retiree is work on my family tree.

And I am not alone. ?In years past, the people who came to the information desk clutching fat file folders and looking for the ?genealogy department? were invariably older folks who had the time and inclination to investigate their origins. They were not above making a special trip to Ontario to carry out their investigation and our library became another destination on their family history holiday, along with local cemeteries, churches and city archives.

But they were often thwarted in their pursuit of family facts.? An hour or two at the public library will usually not yield much if the mother lode is hidden in a book or on microfilm.? These researchers from Kentucky, Ohio or Manitoba would often return? home with only a single date or name ? a tiny clue to help them unravel the mystery of their past.

It is so much faster and easier now to do family history with the help of web sites such as Ancestry.com.? You can even try out the service without commitment and take a limited peek into your genealogy. ?I entered my mother?s name and birthday and was shown part of a record which may or may not be correct. How intriguing! ?I?d love to know more, which is just what the Ancestry folk are counting on.

I may eventually sign up and pay $30.00 for the privilege of doing family research for six weeks in the privacy of my own home. ?But since most libraries subscribe to Ancestry.com, I could begin my search there, using the library internet for free.?? It would be worth it to find out if my mum was a Sara (as we all thought) or a Sarah (which she is in the one public record that I could view online).

I can just imagine her as a Twenties girl, discarding that old-fashioned ?h?....

I?m hooked already. I?m already picking apples off that family tree and I haven?t even planted it yet.
